Circumcision
Details
The story
Catalogues list this small 1503 panel by Albertinelli as the Circumcision, the rite performed on a boy eight days after birth, when Christ received his name. Some scholars describe the same scene instead as the Presentation in the Temple, the later moment when the infant was brought before the priest. Both take place at the temple and can look much alike, which is why the title has never fully settled. It is the last of three little scenes along the base of Albertinelli's Visitation altarpiece, following the Annunciation and the Nativity. Painted in oil on panel, it is now in the Uffizi in Florence.
