The story
This altarpiece passed through several pairs of hands before anyone finished it. The 16th-century biographer Giorgio Vasari implies it was first promised to Filippino Lippi, who died in 1504, and for a long time it carried his name. A document of 1508, published only in 2013, tells a different story. Around 1505 the commission went to Bernardo di Leonardo, one of Filippino's pupils, who left the panel partly unfinished. About 1516 the young Spanish painter Alonso Berruguete took it up, shortly before he went home to Spain, and a third painter completed it, sometimes identified as Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. It stood on the high altar of the church of San Girolamo e San Francesco sulla Costa in Florence until 1746, and in 1813 it was removed and sent to France. Almost three metres tall, it hangs today in Room 710, in the Grande Galerie.
