Cowherds in a Grotto
Details
The story
A group of herders has stopped in the mouth of a rocky grotto, out of the sun, with their cattle, a goat, a mule and a dog gathered around them in the shade. It is the middle of a hot day in a warm southern countryside, the kind of pause that fills so many pastoral scenes: the animals watered and resting, the drovers in no hurry. Berchem painted it in 1654, working in Haarlem, and he built the picture around that cool dark cave and the bright hillside beyond it. Look for the way the light stops at the edge of the grotto and leaves the figures inside in shadow, while the distance stays golden.
