The story

This was made to fold shut like a book, two small hinged panels for private prayer. On one wing the Virgin sits with the Christ Child in a rose garden. On the other a man kneels, presented by Saint George in armour, so that whenever the diptych stood open its owner was shown kneeling before the Mother of God. His name is not known. Memling painted it in Bruges around 1480 to 1490, when merchants and patrons in that trading city paid well for small, exact devotional pictures like this one. The object has since come apart. The outside of the Saint George wing, painted with Saint Anne holding the Virgin and Child, was split from it and is now shown as a separate panel in the same room.
