Eve

In 2020 this pair from Vienna had an unexpected second life. In the third season of the German Netflix series Dark it hangs in the headquarters of a sect called Erit Lux, and for the series this panel was altered so that Eve appears pregnant. In Cranach's original she is not.

She stands by the tree of knowledge, her red-gold hair loose, holding an apple close to the trunk. Above her head the serpent coils along a branch and leans down toward her. Of the two panels, only Adam's carries Cranach's signature. Both belonged to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, whose collection became one of the foundations of the imperial picture gallery in Vienna.
