The story
By 1933 the Bauhaus had been driven out of Dessau and was running privately in Berlin, in a disused telephone factory in the suburb of Steglitz. Kandinsky was still teaching there. The police searched the premises in April, and in July the remaining staff voted to shut the school down themselves rather than continue under the conditions being demanded of them. He painted this in that year, his last in Germany. In December he and his wife Nina left for France and settled at Neuilly, on the western edge of Paris, where he worked for the rest of his life. The picture is now in Jerusalem, at the Israel Museum. He called it Umsomehr, an ordinary German adverb meaning all the more.
