The story
Renoir sold this small canvas to his dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, on 4 August 1908. By April 1910 it had a new owner, the Paris banker and collector Isaac de Camondo. He had already made a will leaving his collection to the Louvre, on condition that it be shown there as a closed group, in rooms bearing his name, for 50 years. Camondo died in April 1911 and the state accepted the bequest later that year. A picture barely three years old, by a painter who was still alive and working, thus passed into the national collection, and from 1914 it hung in the Louvre alongside the rest of his gift. The girl is seen in profile, her long hair loose under a straw hat trimmed with a pale rose, and Renoir's signature sits along the top edge.
