Flowers in a Vase
Details
The story
Of all the paintings in this room, the six flower roundels have changed the most, and this one shows it in its muted whites and yellows and its soft, brownish leaves. Earlier cleanings wore the flowers and foliage thin. A research project based in Delft spent five years, from 2012 to 2017, working out how the Golden Room first looked, and the Mauritshuis turned the results into a digital reconstruction. In it the flower pieces get back their colourful blooms and leaves you can recognise, and the vanished containers are drawn in again.
