Flowers in a Vase
Details
The story
The bouquet here seems to hang in the air, with a stone ledge below it and no clear vase. It was painted with one. The flowers originally stood in gold-coloured containers, set on a ground of brass leaf and drawn only with a thin layer of brown paint. According to the museum, that brown paint was probably removed during an earlier restoration, and the containers went with it. A large salmon-pink bloom still sits at the left, and more roses lie on the ledge at both sides, as if someone had dropped them there.
