Greek Wedding
Details
The story
The bride sits on a low platform, with her family and friends around her, while her mother and her mother-in-law welcome each visitor. One by one the guests hand her their presents, gold jewellery and sumptuous cloth.
None of the women wear veils, since they are inside a house. Out in the street, Ottoman dress rules marked which community a woman belonged to. At home those markers disappeared, and the Rijksmuseum points out that nothing in these indoor clothes lets you tell a Greek woman from a Turkish one.
