The story
In the spring of 1874 Boudin hung his work in a photographer's studio on the boulevard des Capucines in Paris, in the show that got the Impressionists their name. He was 50, one of the oldest exhibitors there, and he never joined another of the group's exhibitions, going back to the official Salon instead.
He went south instead. Bordeaux drew him back in four separate years in the 1870s and he brought home something like 79 views of its port. Lormont sits on the right bank of the Garonne just downstream from the city, on a stretch of river that is still tidal, so the water there rises and falls with the Atlantic.
He signed this one at the lower left with the place and the year, Lormont and 75.
