Hay wagon
Details
The story
In 1905 hay still came in from the Bavarian meadows on horse-drawn wagons, and a loaded cart left standing in a farmyard was an everyday sight. Franz Marc stopped in front of one. The state collections in Munich list the result simply as Heuwagen, hay wagon, painted in 1905 in oil on paper, a sheet about 20 by 27 centimetres. Their record says nothing about the village or the farm where he found it. The hay is heaped so high that it fills most of the sheet, a pale arched gateway opens on the left, and a few dark hens are scratching in the shade between the wheels.
