In St. Cloud Park - Autumn II
Details
The story
In the early summer of 1906, after a winter on the Italian Riviera, Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter took rooms at Sèvres, on the edge of Paris, where they stayed a year. He was 39. What he made there was mostly small studies on cardboard, painted outdoors and laid on thickly with a palette knife, and this autumn view is one of them, a little over 20 centimetres high. The park of Saint-Cloud was a short walk from the house and both of them worked in it. Münter painted its avenues the same season. The picture is in Munich because she kept his work through the decades after they separated and handed more than a thousand Blue Rider pieces to the Lenbachhaus in 1957, on her 80th birthday.
