Details
The story
Pinned to the silver and pale pink dress is a brooch in the shape of a double-headed eagle, the emblem of the Holy Roman Empire. On a Spanish princess it announced whose bride she was going to be. Margarita Teresa, daughter of King Philip IV, was promised to her uncle, the Emperor Leopold I in Vienna, and the engagement was formally settled in 1663. The portrait was painted after April 1661 by Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, who had taken over as court painter in Madrid when Velázquez died, and who worked on with the old master's studio. The canvas in Vienna is listed simply as imperial property, and a second version of it is in the Prado in Madrid.
