Intérieur au Mas-Bilier, près de Limoges
Details
The story
Most of Corot's pictures are out of doors, and a farmhouse room like this one is unusual in his work. The place is the Mas-Bilier, near Limoges. Corot came to the Limousin several times in the middle of the century, visits recorded into the 1860s, and the Louvre dates the canvas only to the third quarter of the 19th century. The room is dark, with a heavy beam and a shelf running under the ceiling. A girl in a straw hat and a red scarf sits on a chair in the middle, a bed with white sheets behind her. Further back an open door lets in a little daylight, and two small figures stand beside it. At the far left, near a heavy dresser, a small child crouches on the floor beside another figure.
