Interior with Three Women

This quiet interior comes from Toorop's Brussels years, when he was in his mid-twenties and working in several manners at once, from plain realism to the new dotted colour. Three women sit in a shadowed domestic room, and the picture is really about the low indoor light and the way it settles on faces and cloth while the corners stay dark. He kept the palette narrow and the mood hushed, and told us nothing about who the three women are or why they are together.
