Joseph going to prison
Details
The story
This is a wronged man being led away. In the Genesis story Joseph, a Hebrew slave in the house of an Egyptian official, refuses the advances of his master's wife. She accuses him of the very thing he would not do, and he is marched off to prison for it. Granacci sets the scene as a long, low frieze, the shape it needed to be because the picture was never meant to hang on a wall. It was built into the wooden panelling of a Florentine bedroom, part of a set of Joseph scenes running around the room at eye level. The story runs on from here. In prison Joseph reads the dreams of his fellow inmates, and that skill is what eventually carries him to the Egyptian court.
