The story

Above the fireplace in the nursery of Petronella Oortman's dolls' house is an oval about the size of a playing card, 6.5 by 9.3 centimetres. In it Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, reclines on the ground with his thunderbolt in the crook of his left arm, and his eagle stands behind him. The little panel sits in a smooth gilt frame. Two small ovals on copper hang in the same room, a quack at a market and a woman selling her wares at a cottage door. The Rijksmuseum does not know who painted the Jupiter.
