L'Église de Moret au soleil
Details
The story
Sisley settled in Moret-sur-Loing in 1889, in a house across the street from the church of Notre-Dame. In 1893 and 1894 he painted that church about a dozen times from the same upstairs window, always from the south-west, so every canvas gives the same west door and the same wall of the nave under different light. The titles he used were plain weather notes, in sunshine, in rain, under frost, and he showed a group of them in Paris in 1894. This is one of the sunlit ones, dated that year and listed as number 837 in the standard catalogue of his paintings.
After he died in 1899 it passed to his daughter Jeanne. On 18 May 1909 the dealer Georges Petit auctioned 14 Sisleys in Paris, this canvas among them, and from the day of that sale the records name its owner as Paul Rosenberg, a young Paris dealer who would be handling Picasso within ten years.
