The story

Renoir bought Les Collettes, a farm on the hill above Cagnes-sur-Mer, in June 1907, after hearing that the other buyer meant to fell the old olive trees and sell the wood for napkin rings. His wife Aline, who had grown up among farmers, pushed hardest for the purchase. The family moved in the year after that, and the house and the olive grove around it became standing subjects for him. By 1912 rheumatoid arthritis had closed his hands and he was carried around the property in a chair. An attack of paralysis that same year took away what was left of his walking. He kept painting every day, at Cagnes, until his death in 1919.
