The story

De Jode painted this as the companion to a harbour scene, and both canvases are signed and dated 1657. The museum links the pair to Salvator Rosa, the Neapolitan painter whose untamed scenery, broken rocks, storm-torn trees and rushing water, was much in demand among collectors in Italy in these years. The waterfall that gives the picture its name belongs to that taste. What a painter from Holland added was his own northern habit of watching light and air. This canvas came to the museum from the collection of Bartolomeo Dal Pozzo, a collector in Verona.
