The story

This panel and a second one, dated a year later, were painted as a pair, and they mirror each other. Here the herders rest at the right, a young man leaning back against a woman with a dog beside them. In the middle a white billy goat with long twisted horns stands over the resting sheep. In the companion panel the couple sits at the left and a reddish ox lies at the right. The Austrian State Gallery, as the Belvedere was then called, bought both in 1916, in the middle of the First World War, and in 1918 this one was shown among the gallery's acquisitions of the war years. In 1926 it reappeared in an exhibition devoted to animal painting. Roos signed and dated it in the bottom corner, just below the resting couple.
