Landscape with pine
Details
The story
One pine fills almost the whole height of this canvas, which Shishkin painted in 1890 in an upright format, about 66 centimetres tall and 43 wide. He sets the tree on the left and lets its long reddish branches reach across the picture, while a mixed wood stays behind it as background. An audio guide to the Kazan collection points out how far he took the detail, the bark, the needles, the bushes and grass, the dry twigs on the ground, and even a crumbling stump in the lower left corner. The picture entered the collection of the art museum in Kazan in 1975, and it is catalogued there under the plain title Landscape with a Pine.
