Landscape with Shepherds and the Burning Bush
Details
The story
Moses, before he was the lawgiver, worked as a shepherd for his father-in-law, and it was out on the hillside with the flock that he saw a bush burning without being consumed and heard God speak from it. This wide canvas keeps that sacred instant folded into ordinary country life. Sheep, goats and herdsmen spread across a broad evening landscape, and the miracle is only a small bright note within all that pasture. The balance is deliberate. The painting comes from the workshop of the Bassano family, late-16th-century masters of the biblical scene dressed as rural labour, and here the disguise is nearly complete. Its long, low shape suggests it was meant to sit above a door or run along a wall as part of a decorated room. In a picture like this you almost have to look for the fire to find the story hidden inside the farmyard.
