The story

The signature in the lower corner reads "Brand le jeune", Brand the younger. His father, the landscape painter Christian Hilfgott Brand, had died in 1756, two years earlier, and the son still signed himself that way. Here he looks south-west across the country around Laxenburg, where the court hunted with falcons. The foreground is wet meadow with standing water. A cart rolls along a track, cattle graze further off, and a long-legged hound streaks across the grass after a smaller animal while a white bird flies low nearby. Riders in red coats gather beside a raised wooden pavilion. Beyond them, villages with church towers run to the foot of the hills of the Vienna Woods, pale in the haze. The museum dates the canvas to probably 1758, as the last digit of the painted date is uncertain.
