The story
Hortense Fiquet sat for Cezanne 29 times by the usual count, over nearly 30 years, more often than any other model he had. He painted this one in the early 1890s, when the marriage had settled into long separations, he in Aix, she in Paris. In 1890 the two of them and their son made a journey of about five months through Switzerland, the only time he left France, and he came home before they did. Outside a small circle of painters and dealers, hardly anyone in the country had seen his work. His first one-man show, at Ambroise Vollard's shop in Paris, was still five years off, and he was in his early fifties by then. This is one of 69 paintings by him at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.
