The story

This is early Bellini, painted around 1457 when Giovanni was still a young man in his father Jacopo's busy Venice workshop. A few years before, in 1453, his sister had married Andrea Mantegna, the sharpest draughtsman in northern Italy, and for a while that family tie pulled Mantegna's hard, almost carved line into Bellini's own hand. His Madonnas from these years carry it: firm outlines and a certain gravity, the soft Venetian light he later became famous for not yet arrived. This is one of them, a small tempera panel of the Virgin and Child, the kind of image made for private prayer at home rather than for a church wall. It has never hung in a public museum, and remains in private hands today.
