The story

Saint Omobono is a rare figure to find in a picture like this, and his presence tells you who paid for it. Omobono was a merchant of Cremona and the patron saint of tailors, and his usual attribute is a pair of scissors. Bonifazio set him here beside the Madonna and Child, along with the young John the Baptist and Saint Barbara, because the altarpiece was ordered by the Scuola dei Sartori, the tailors' guild of Venice, for the altar of their hall. He delivered it in 1533 and signed and dated it, something he did on almost no other work, which makes this one of only two paintings that carry both his name and a year. The scissors in Omobono's hand are the guild's own trade, set quietly into a holy scene.
