The story

This gentle Madonna comes from the workshop of Pietro Perugino, the Umbrian master who was among the most sought-after painters in Italy around 1500. Look at how neatly the figures fit together: the Virgin, the Christ Child, little Saint John and his mother Elizabeth. Compositions like this were built from a shared pool of drawings, stock figures the shop could recombine again and again to meet demand. Devout families wanted a tender holy image for the home, and Perugino's studio supplied them, softening every face into the same calm sweetness that made his name. That is why so many closely related versions survive across Europe. This one carries no signature and no firm date, an unassuming product of a busy studio doing what it did best.
