Miguel Fernández Durán, marquis of Tolosa

Spain's first national bank, the Banco de San Carlos, had been going only a few years when it decided in 1784 to have its directors' portraits painted as they left office. Goya got the commissions, and this is one of them, the Marquis of Tolosa, a court official and knight of the order of Calatrava, painted in 1786 at around 66. He stands in a black frock coat with gold thread over a red waistcoat, a hat in one hand and a cane in the other, the enamelled cross of his order on his chest. The bank's ledgers record that Goya was paid 10,000 reales for this and two other portraits together. The Banco de San Carlos became the Banco de Espana, and the picture still hangs in its collection.
