The story

A young woman leans her head against her raised right hand and looks straight out at us, her fair hair put up and tied with a ribbon. She wears a green gown with a white shawl of fine batiste and white cuffs, and a small spray of flowers is pinned at her breast. The whole portrait is just over five centimetres high, painted in watercolour and gouache on ivory. Her gown and piled-up hair follow the fashion of the 18th century, although the Rijksmuseum dates the miniature itself to the second half of the 1800s.
