Moses before the Burning Thorn Bush
Details
The story
In the Book of Exodus Moses is still a shepherd, minding his father-in-law's flock, when a bush on the mountainside catches fire without burning away and a voice speaks to him out of the flames. It tells him to take off his sandals, because the ground where he stands is holy, and then gives him the task of leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Fetti chose the moment in between. This is a large canvas, over a metre and a half tall, painted around 1615 to 1617 and far bigger than the small panels he is best known for. The shepherd is dazed by what he sees. Slowly and a little clumsily he bends to his sandals, doing as he is told before he has any idea what is about to be asked of him.
