Our garden with blooming borders
Details
The story
The house on Bornheimer Straße in Bonn was built in the late 1870s for Sophie Gerhardt. Her daughter Elisabeth married August Macke, and in February 1911 the young couple moved in with their small son and took the attic, which was rebuilt as a studio, the first one he ever had.
The garden came with the house, which is why the German title says ours. Rabatten are the long borders of planting that run beside a path, and those are what the title singles out.
He had three and a half years in that house and made more than 400 paintings there. This one went to Hamburg, where it hangs on long-term loan from a private owner.
