Painted Wall Hanging of a Dutch Landscape with an Open Bridge
Details
The story
This is the widest of the three canvases that survive from the set, more than five metres across. At its centre a Dutch drawbridge stands open, its deck raised on wooden beams, and behind it rises the mast of a sailing vessel on its way through.
On the far bank a horse and cart cross a second bridge towards a cluster of brick houses, and above the trees stand the towers of a large country house. A church spire shows in the distance. In the foreground two men fish from the bank, one of them raising his hat, and a rowing boat carries two passengers across the water.
