The story
The Carnavalet is the museum of the history of Paris, and it collects the city as painters saw it. This view reached it in 1987, transferred from the Petit Palais, the city's fine-arts museum. Signac signed and dated it in the lower left corner in 1928. The canvas is long and low, 46 by 116 centimetres, so the eye travels across it the way it would along the river. The quai du Louvre runs in on the left, the quai Malaquais on the right, and the iron footbridge of the Pont des Arts crosses between them. Beyond it are the arches of the Pont Neuf, the Île de la Cité and the thin spire of the Sainte-Chapelle. The picture was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in 1934, the year before Signac died.
