Peasant Boy
Details
The story
In the late 1920s Else Berg turned more than once to working people as her subject. A view of the mining district near Tilleur, close to Liège in Belgium, dates from about 1927, and she painted a portrait of a farmer around the same time as this boy, in 1929. The Stedelijk calls the picture simply Boerenjongen, peasant boy, and records neither the sitter's name nor the place. The museum holds a whole group of Berg's paintings, from still lifes to the white farmhouses she painted in the southern Dutch province of Limburg in 1934.
