The story

Look at this portrait with an infrared camera and a second, older picture appears underneath. Below the young king in his fashionable bright clothes lies an earlier version, where Philip wears a suit of armor with a military helmet resting on a table beside him. The painter seems to have reworked the canvas years after starting it. Philip the Fourth came to the throne as a teenager in the 1620s and made the young Velazquez his court painter, a partnership that lasted the rest of both their lives. This particular canvas has divided experts for over a century over whether it is really from the master's own hand. The American circus owner John Ringling bought it at auction in 1928, and it has stayed in Florida ever since.
