The story

In 1939, with war approaching, the Czartoryski family moved the paintings from their castle museum at Gołuchów to Warsaw for safety. This portrait went with them, and it was confiscated by the German occupiers. Nothing more was heard of it until 1948, when it appeared at a gallery in New York, described only as coming from an important European collection. A collector from Richmond, Virginia, bought it and gave it to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1952. It stayed there for more than 50 years, until the museum's registrar matched it against Poland's published catalogue of wartime losses. In 2005 the museum announced it would send it back, and the portrait returned to the Czartoryski collection in Kraków, where the young man in the red hat is still pulling on his white glove.
