The story

We no longer know who she was. Pourbus painted this woman around 1600, and at some point her name fell out of the record even as the picture itself was kept. That was common. A portrait of this kind recorded a family's standing more than a personality. The fine clothes and jewels of the age announced lineage and a good marriage, and when the commissioning family died out the sitter often went nameless with it. The Uffizi lists it simply as a portrait of a woman, by Pourbus, from around 1600.
