Portrait of Pope Julius II
Details
The story
In 1545 Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, was gathering portraits of the famous men of his family, and the grandest was Julius II, born Giuliano della Rovere, pope until his death in 1513. Titian took the commission and used his trip to Rome that year to copy the portrait Raphael had painted of him around 1511, which was then kept in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo. The beard is worth stopping on. Julius grew it while papal land was being fought over with France, and Raphael painted a worn-out old man. Raphael's original is in London now. This same palace keeps another version of that face a few rooms along, in the Saturn Room, painted in Raphael's workshop and sent to Urbino in its day.
