Portrait of the Painter Lambertus Lourijsen
Details
The story
The young man here is Lambertus Lourijsen, himself a painter. He was born in 1885, nearly thirty years after Toorop, studied under him and became a friend. Toorop painted this portrait in 1911 on a small scale and with a quick, spirited touch, the kind of thing done for someone you know rather than for a commission. By this date he had left his pointillist landscapes and his elaborate Symbolist drawings behind, and portraits of family and friends took up much of his work. Lourijsen went on painting for another four decades and died in 1950.
