Portrait of Vittoria della Rovere as a Saint
Details
The story
The Italian state catalogue calls this a portrait of Vittoria della Rovere as a saint and stops there, because the picture does not say which saint. Medici women were painted in saintly guise so regularly that the titles stop telling the pictures apart, and Vittoria della Rovere, grand duchess of Tuscany from 1634, sat for several of them. The museum separates this one from its near-twins by its numbers, a canvas 62 by 51 centimetres, Inventario 1890 number 5741, dated to about 1640, a half-length figure in blue and rose drapery. On the back there is an older mark, P. 31, written in black and struck through in red, left by some earlier reckoning of the grand-ducal pictures before the inventory that holds it now.
