The story

After Frederik Hendrik died in 1647, his widow Amalia of Solms turned the great hall of her palace, Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, into a monument to him. The Oranjezaal, or Orange Hall, was painted by a team of Dutch and Flemish artists, and Salomon de Bray was among them. This canvas, more than two and a half metres wide, was made to hang above a fireplace. De Bray painted it to look like carved stone, with putti holding up a cartouche whose Latin inscription gives the prince's birth in Delft on 29 January 1584, written the Roman way as the fourth day before the Kalends of February. He signed and dated it 1651.

Around 1805 the fireplace gave way to doors into the palace's Japanese Room, and the painting was taken down. In 1875 it turned up in the attic of the Mauritshuis.
