The story
The church this came off was a piece of stagecraft. At Santa Maria presso San Satiro in Milan a street ran behind the altar and left no room for a proper choir, so Bramante built one out of moulded and painted terracotta about 97 centimetres deep, which reads from the nave as a space of nearly 10 metres. Bergognone frescoed the transept niches of that same church around 1494 and 1495, playing a smaller version of the game. His saints stand in a painted open loggia, with columns beside them and open country behind.
Agnes shared her bay with Euphemia and Barbara, three figures to a niche. She is painted about 170 centimetres tall, so anyone crossing the transept passed her at roughly their own height, standing in an architecture that was only ever paint.
