The story

Around 1480 a winged altarpiece usually stayed shut on ordinary days and was opened on Sundays and feasts. The Belvedere's catalogue calls this gilded interior the Sunday side, and only there has the frame been replaced. Pope Gregory the Great wears a tall tiara and holds a book and a papal cross, while a white dove perches on his shoulder, the Holy Spirit that legend says spoke into his ear as he wrote. Beside him Agatha of Catania carries long-handled pincers, the instrument of her martyrdom. The museum lists the panel as workshop of the Master of Grossgmain. The weekday face is plainer and badly worn. Erasmus, a bishop, holds the windlass of his legend, Barbara stands with a chalice beside her tower, and in the corner is the shield of Provost Erasmus Pretschlaipfer.
