Saints Ursula and Catherine
Details
The story
This picture and the Saint George nearby were once a single board, painted on both sides for an altarpiece wing at St Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, with the dragon fight outside and these two saints within. Later the board was split into two pictures, and both still measure about 97 by 72 centimetres. This side's paint was eventually moved from the wood onto canvas.
Ursula holds an arrow, the weapon that killed her at Cologne in her legend, and a staff with a red banner scattered with gold crowns. Catherine holds an open book, and at her feet lie the sword of her execution and the spiked wheel that broke apart when she was to be tortured on it. Under the hem of her pink gown a crowned man in a red turban lies pinned, the emperor Maxentius, who condemned her.
