The story

The Prado believes this panel is very likely the one recorded in the Alcázar in Madrid in 1666 and again in 1686, in a small room the household called el Retiradizo. The 1686 entry carries a note about an accident. The picture had fallen, it had been sent out to a painter's house to be put right, and it came back to the palace out of its frame.

Around the medallion with the Virgin, the Child and the infant John, Seghers hung roses, tulips and carnations, columbine, lily of the valley and hellebore. The museum's index of what grows in this panel also finds a seven-spot ladybird, a lily beetle, a hoverfly and aphids on the stems.

Two hands are credited here. The flowers are Seghers, the figures Cornelis Schut, though the museum's catalogue of 1920 weighed Schut against Erasmus Quellinus before settling on the first. In 1834 the royal museum's clerks had given the whole panel to another Antwerp flower painter, Van Kessel.
