The story
Eckersberg's journal dates this small canvas almost to the day. He painted it at the Academy in Copenhagen between 10 August and 6 September 1839, from a model named Trine Nielsen, and on 25 September he sold it to a buyer named Rasmus Borch. It stayed with Danish owners for more than a century, first with Borch's daughter and her husband, a doctor, and later with the Lundsgaard family.
Trine Nielsen sits in profile holding her plait, with blue cloth across her lap, a table covered in red at the left and a dark green curtain behind her. Eckersberg put his monogram on a frame he painted around the picture himself. The Louvre bought the canvas from a Munich gallery in 1987, paying for it with money left to the museum by Sylvia Aston.
