The story
The man looking out of this panel was a Greek born in Constantinople who took French nationality in 1885 and built his whole career in Paris. The National Gallery in Athens holds 45 of his paintings, and in this one he painted himself.
It is a small picture on a wooden panel rather than canvas, 46 by 38 centimetres. The gallery prints no date for it at all, so it sits loose somewhere inside a working life of more than 30 years.
