The story

Pissarro moved his family to Éragny in the spring of 1884, a village on the small river Epte about 100 kilometres northwest of Paris. He took it because the rent was low and there was a large household to keep on very little money. This is one of his first winters there. The tower on the skyline is the church at Bazincourt, the next village across the fields, and he painted it over and over for the next 20 years, in snow, in fog, at harvest, from the garden and from the meadow. He rented the house for eight years before he could buy it, and the money for that came in 1892 as a loan from Monet.
